Holland & Sherry

An iOS app that allows clients or interior designers to ‘place’ a 3D model of a custom designed rug in their prospective spaces to see how it would look and feel in their environment.

My Role

Product Designer, UX/UI (March 2018- May 2018)

After securing an initial business development meeting with the head of design at Holland & Sherry, we thoroughly discussed the challenges that their company was facing and in turn how my design experience could positively affect their sales

  • Handled all product design decisions, UX strategy, and UI design
  • ‍Developed (SWIFT) a working iOS prototype that Holland & Sherry is debating on making available in the App Store
  • ‍Designed a standalone prototype in Principle that demonstrated the pixel perfect design and functionality of the app

Problem

The main constraint of Holland & Sherry Interiors is that 90% of the rugs are custom designed with little to no inventory on hand.  With every order a custom ‘strike off’ or 1 foot by 1 foot piece of the design needs to be produced. This can take up to 6 weeks to weave and ship from production in Nepal.

If the strike off is approved production of the full sized rug can take up to 9 months.

  • Client needs to commit to a custom produced rug without ever having seen the product in the space that it was designed for
  • ‍Currently there is no way to show client's what their design would look like in 3D or in their prospective space
  • ‍There is not a system in place to portray the design patterns in different scales or custom dimensions
  • ‍No digital solution for comments & feedback

Solution

iOS Prototype

Principle Prototype

Clients or interior designers can now see custom rug designs in their own environments immediately without waiting for a 'strike off' or 9 months of rug production.

  • Import Photoshop designs directly into CrazyBump -> Unity -> Xcode -> Interiors App in 3D with high levels of realism
  • ‍Rug objects can be placed, rotated and scaled to any viewable size on the iPhone or iPad
  • ‍Pixel perfect design is simple yet robust and user friendly while addressing all of the client’s needs
  • ‍Comments & feedback can be left for any rug in the app and easily viewed by sales associates

Principle Prototype

Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself!

  • Download on any Apple computer (Not iPhone)
  • ‍Attached PDF with 'Hot Spots'
  • ‍View pixel perfect UI
  • ‍Navigate the menus

  • ‍MoSCoW/SWOT chart
  • ‍Create a site map
  • ‍Bump Map / CrazyBump
  • ‍Collect assets
  • ‍Code in SWIFT/Xcode
  • ‍User testing -> design pivots
  • ‍Pixel perfect design & Principle prototype

Results

Interiors App was selected to be part of the NYC Media Lab 2018 AR/VR Demo Competition:

  • ‍Founded in 2010, dedicated to driving innovation and ultimately job growth in media and technology
  • ‍Facilitating collaboration between the City’s universities and its companies
  • ‍Comprised of a consortium including New York City Economic Development Corporation, School of Visual Arts, New York University, Columbia University, The New School, CUNY, IESE, and Pratt Institute
  • ‍Generate research and development, knowledge transfer, and talent across all of the city’s campuses

Demo Video Submission

Interiors App was already used in a sale of over $100,000.

  • A client was not sure to what scale they wanted the pattern of the rug they were interested to commission
  • I was able to load up 3 different scales of the design, take it to their currently empty space and present the client exactly what the different options would look like
  • ‍The client chose a version from the app that was manufactured in Nepal by hand over 9 months and delivered directly to the location in Manhattan
